Ashvale Chronicle

★★★★★ 4.7 Editor rating

Ashvale Chronicle is the kind of mobile RPG I keep hoping for and rarely get. The combat is classic turn-based, but what pulls you forward is the writing — your party is a group of reluctant guards trying to keep one forgotten town alive, and the quiet moments between fights are where it shines. Characters remember things you said three chapters ago.

Progression is refreshingly honest. You level through doing quests, not through a wall of daily logins, and skill points let you actually shape a character instead of filling a predetermined bar. I built my healer into a half-mage by accident and the game just let me run with it.

It plays great in short sessions because battles save mid-turn, so you can put it down anywhere. My only gripe is the map screen is a bit cramped on a smaller phone, but that's a small price for how much heart is packed in here.
