In praise of the four-hour mobile adventure

August 6, 2026 · Henrik Vasold

We've been trained to measure value in hours, and mobile games lean into that hard with endless loops and seasons that never end. So it felt almost radical to play Hollow Lantern, finish it in an afternoon, and feel completely satisfied.

A short adventure can afford to be dense. Every room in Hollow Lantern earns its place because there aren't fifty of them. The puzzles connect, the mood never sags, and it ends while you still wish there were more. That's a better feeling than a game outstaying its welcome by forty hours.

I think the phone is actually the perfect place for this length. You play in sittings, and a tight four-hour game fits a week of commutes without becoming a chore you owe yourself. There's no backlog guilt.

So if you've been circling a short game wondering whether it's worth the price, consider that finishing something is its own reward. Longer isn't the same as better.
