Touch controls that actually work
Most bad mobile games aren't bad because of their ideas. They're bad because somebody ported a console control scheme onto a glass rectangle and called it a day. Good touch design is a whole craft, and you notice it most when it's absent.
Neon Coast Drift is a small masterclass. One finger, hold to drift, feather to steer. It designed its entire track layout around what a thumb can actually do, so you never feel like you're wrestling the car. Compare that to racers that cram a virtual steering wheel onto the screen and watch your palm cover half the action.
The trick most of my favorites share is a single meaningful input. Volcane Spins is one tap. Hollow Lantern is point and tap. When a game commits to doing one thing well on touch, it almost always feels better than something trying to be a controller.
Next time a mobile game feels frustrating, check whether you're fighting the game or fighting the interface. More often than not it's the interface.
