Cozy games and the timer problem

June 1, 2026 · Henrik Vasold

Cozy sims are supposed to be the stress-free corner of mobile gaming. Tiny Harbor Days mostly earns that, but it also reminded me how easily a build timer can poison the whole vibe.

The loop is lovely: collect catches, reinvest, watch your little port grow. For an hour it's genuinely soothing. Then you hit an upgrade that takes several real hours, and suddenly the cozy game is checking its watch and so are you. The relaxation leaks out.

To be fair, Tiny Harbor Days keeps the timers mild compared to a lot of its peers, and nothing you build ever gets taken away. But it's a reminder that pacing is a design choice, not a law of nature. A cozy game can let you keep playing if it wants to.

My take: if a game's whole pitch is relaxation, timers are working against the pitch. The best cozy games know this and get out of your way.
