How we actually review a game at EmberBox
People sometimes ask how we land on a number, so here's the honest version. We install the game, play it the way a normal person would, and keep notes in a shared doc that nobody but us ever sees. It's messier than it sounds.
The real test is around day three or four. That's usually when a game shows its hand — either it opens up and gets richer, or the loop starts repeating and the cracks show. We try not to write a word of the review before we hit that point. Early impressions lie.
We argue a lot about ratings. A score here is a conversation that ends in a compromise, not a formula. If two of us disagree strongly, that disagreement usually ends up in the review itself, because you deserve to know when a game is divisive.
Then we sit on it for a day and reread with fresh eyes. Half the time we soften a hot take, occasionally we sharpen one. However it lands, the goal is the same: tell you honestly whether we'd keep it on our own phones.
